Privilege Escalation

About

In this module of the Junior Penetration Tester learning path, you will learn privilege escalation on Linux lab targets in the ciberbots.local environment: local enumeration, misconfiguration abuse, credential harvesting, and validation. Getting an initial shell is only the first step. In real engagements, that first shell is often a low-privileged user with limited access. Privilege escalation is the art and science of turning that foothold into meaningful control over the target. Upon completion of the module, students will be able to: • Build a structured mindset for enumerating local privilege escalation paths. • Explain what Linux privilege escalation is and how it differs from initial access. • Practice common Linux privilege escalation techniques on intentionally misconfigured hosts. • Identify SUID, sudo, cron, capabilities, and credential-based escalation paths on Linux systems. • Learn how to safely test and validate misconfiguration abuse without destabilizing the shared lab environment. • Document root causes and remediation guidance for discovered paths. • Prepare for the later Post-Exploitation and Tunneling unit.
